Indications – Who can use BioEye


BioEye prostheses can been used by patients who already use an artificial eye, those who have undergone surgical procedure of evisceration or exenteration and those who have an eye of smaller volume than the normal one (fthisic)

Fitting and manufacture scheduling

The fitting and manufacturing process is painless for the patient. In case the patient uses an artificial eye of different technology, he can still wear it until the process is finished.
There is no need of any previous preparation from the patient.
Fitting and manufacturing consists of four steps which can be concluded in two or four visits. The total time needed can be 48 hours for people with travelling difficulties, at EYEART Laboratories manufacturing facilities. When a mobile facility is visited, the two visits are performed with a few days of interval.
The procedure is only made following an appointment.

 

STEP 1 – Impression/First model fitting

Taking the impression is performed with precision medical grade materials, providing the essential details.
The first model of BioEye is manufactured and applying the unique SBF (Selective Buckling Fitting) technique, the shape and volume is accordingly modified to assure patient comfort, eyelid shape symmetry, upper lid deformity correction, maximum eye movement and precise iris position.

STEP 2 – Fitting of second model

Selective Buckling Fitting technique of BioEye prostheses guarantees maximum possible symmetry, ideal fitting and instant adaptation. For theses reasons before the final BioEye manufacture a temporary prostheses is manufactured from the proper material, achieving the precision needed and a final evaluation.

STEP 3 – Manufacture of 3D aesthetic parts

BioEye is ‘build up’ in 50 to 60 separate layers, following the same structure as a natural eye, based on photos digitation with high magnification.
The final surface treatment, performed in four phases, ending to a smooth shiny surface, facilitating eyelid movements, sufficient tear circulation, natural and three dimensional appearance as in natural eyes.

 STEP 4 – Final fitting

During the final step, BioEye is worn and controlled. Digitally photographed and symmetry is objectively evaluated. Physilology of underlying tissues is double checked. Micro modifications might be performed at this stage.

BioEye instructions of use

  1. BioEye should be removed only when needed according to the fitter’s instructions. The eye socket should not remain without the prostheses, unless other instructions are given by the specialist or ophthalmologist.
  2. The uses of pure alcohol is absolutely prohibited on the BioEye surface, because it may damage it.
  3. BioEye when taken off should be store in physiological saline solution or even better in hard contact lens storing solutions.
  4. Surface cleaning should be done with appropriate special surfactants for hard contact lenses.
  5. It is important to visit the prostheses specialist once every six months or a year for a follow up check. Small fitting changes are not evident to the user or his close persons, but can be diagnosed and corrected by the specialist.
  6. Poly methyl methacrylate (pmma) prostheses have a life time of 5 to 7 years. BioEye replacement should be done within this period to assure correct fit and normal tissue physiology.

BioEye insertion

1st method

-Using the right hand lower lid is pulled down.
-Using the left hand upper lid is pulled upwards.
-BioEye is holder with the thumb and forefinger of the right hand, with the special orientation mark to the top and the upper part of the BioEye is inserted under the upper eyelid, pushing gently upwards.
-Then BioEye is holded in position with the forefinger of the right hand and with the left hand, the lower eyelid is pulled down to allow the lower part of BioEye to pass in the lower lid space.
2nd method
-The appropriate sucker is moisturized and holding it with the right hand BioEye is sucked.
-BioEye is hold with the special orientation mark to the top and it’s upper part is inserted under the upper eyelid, having pulled upwards the upper lid with the other hand.
-Pressing gently BioEye under the upper lid, lower lid is pulled down, using the forefinger of the other hand, to allow BioEye to pass in the lower lid space.
BioEye removal
1st method
-Upper eyelid is pulled upward with the left hand and eyes look upwards.
-Using right hand forefinger the lower lid is puled down, from the nasal side and is slipped towards the temple, until the lower part of the BioEye comes out of the lower lid space.
-The eyes look downwards and BioEye comes out.
2nd method
-The appropriate sucker is moisturized and holding it with the right hand BioEye is sucked.
-The lower part of the BioEye is lifted outwards and looking upwards, BioEye is slipped outwards and downwards, outside the lid margins.

Cleanign and storing of BioEye

The general rules of hard contact lenses apply for the BioEyes.
The recommended products for better cleaning are:
